39%

Donald Trump has been back in the White House for not quite 100 days. Many things could be and have been said about that – the illegal deportations and plans to deport citizens and the actual deportation of three U.S. citizen children, one of them with cancer; the corruption; the economic carnage; the moves to give us all food poisoning. The list goes on.

Prominent Democrats have had disagreements about how to respond to all of this, and here and now I'm not going to get into the specifics of who has argued for capitulation to a fascist coup. Because what I want to talk about is the evidence that they're wrong.

That evidence comes in the form of the first major polls showing Trump's approval ratings under 40%. Specifically, 39%. In two different polls. (AP/NORC and ABC News/Washington Post) That's low, to be clear. Very low.

Just over half of people in the AP/NORC poll think Trump has been a poor or terrible president, and while that's way too high to reflect the reality, it's not a good polling result for him. That includes more than half of independents, by the way.

We can interpret this multiple ways. It's definitely the case that a lot of people who sat out the 2024 election did so in part because they didn't really believe that Trump would do most of the things he was promising to do. That's likely much more significant than the number of Trump voters who now regret their votes, although those people exist as well. But what's important is that Trump's actions are not popular despite the utter capitulation by much of the media, many higher education institutions, major law firms, and, yes, some Democratic politicians.

Here are a couple of very good points that have been made in response to this abysmal poll for Trump. First, the media continues to fail us:

Biden, 52%: “low end approval” Trump, 39%: proceeding “as expected”

Second, this right here:

A useful way to think about his tanking poll numbers is that they would be far worse if more people knew what he is doing

Right now, take heart and remember that when your opponent is sinking, it's a good time to throw him an anvil.
