Harrison Ford says he's endorsing presidential candidate for first time: Kamala offers "a new way forward"

3 min read

As Indiana Jones, he fought the Nazis. As Han Solo, he battled the Galactic Empire. And now Harrison Ford says that ā€œafter 64 years of votingā€ he is publicly endorsing a presidential candidate: Vice President Kamala Harris. And he’s sending a message that the Democratic ticket represents ā€œa new way forwardā€ for America.

Ford made the endorsement in three video ads released Saturday by the Harris-Walz campaign.

In one video, Ford begins by saying that he has decided ā€œto do something I never thought I’d do, telling people I’ve never met who I’m voting for and why I think they might do the sameā€ in this election.

He adds:

ā€œThis election I’m casting my ballot for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Do I agree with every one of their policies, of course not. Do I think they’re perfect, come on for crying out loud the are people just like you and me. But these two people believe in the rule of law. They believe in science. They believe that when you govern, you do so for all Americans, they believe that we are in this together. These are ideas I believe in. These are people I can get behind.

ā€œLook I’m frustrated by a lot of the things in this country. I’m sure you are too. But the other guy, he spent four years turning us against each other while embracing dictators and tyrants around the world. That’s not who we are.

ā€œWe don’t need to make America great again. Come on, we are great, but what we need is to work together again. What we need is a president who works for all of us again.ā€

In the second video, Ford says:

ā€œWhen dozens of former members of the Trump administration are sounding alarms saying ā€˜For God's sake, don't do this again,’ you have to pay attention. They're telling us something important. These aren’t soft people. They’re governors, generals standing up against the leader of the party they’ve spent their lives advocating for. For many of them this will be the first time they’ve ever voted for someone who doesn’t have an `R’ next to their name because they know this really matters.ā€

He continues:

ā€œThe truth is this, Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her about policies or ideas, and then, as we have done for centuries, we’ll debate them. We’ll work on them together, and we’ll move forward. The other guy, he demands unquestioning loyalty, says he wants revenge. I’m Harrison Ford. I’ve got one vote — same as anyone else — and I’m going to use it to move forward. I’m going to vote for Kamala Harris.ā€

And in a third video, Ford narrates an ad that makes a pitch to voters who remain undecided just three days before the election. Ford says:

ā€œEveryone is political. we don’t have a choice because we all live together in this big crazy system and our votes will determine whether this is a country that looks forward towards optimism and ideals or we just keep rubbing salt in each other’s wounds.

ā€œIf you’re still on the fence, here’s a good thing to look at: Who’s trying to scare you into voting for them? Who’s trying to make you look at your neighbors with anger, suspicion, hatred, and who is encouraging you to build something with the people around you?ā€

The video then cuts to a clip of Harris speaking to a rally and saying: ā€œIt is time for a new generation of leadership in America.ā€ And Ford concludes: ā€œIt would be really nice to move forward.ā€

Taken together the three video ads represent a powerful and positive message to deliver to voters in the closing days of the campaign.

Mark Hamill, who endorsed Harris shortly after she entered the race, reacted to Ford’s announcement on X, formerly Twitter: 'Thanks, pal. #HarrisWalz2024,' adding a thumbs up emoji.

So now we’ve got Han Solo and Luke Skywalker together on Team Harris-Walz. The Force is indeed with us and the MAGA death star is about to explode.

Does it remind you of a certain scene from ā€œStar Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.ā€
