AI data centers are already costing you thousands, even if you don’t use AI

Maybe you are lucky enough not to live in an area where AI data centers are driving up the cost of electricity. Or having to truck in water because data centers sucked your aquifer dry. Or watching your home value implode because of the 24/7 drone from your humongous neighbor.

You’re still paying for AI data centers, and the price is probably far higher than you think.

In March, Sony raised the price of its Playstation game console by $100. In June, Apple raised the price of its most popular computer by $200. When new iPhones were released in September, not only were they more expensive than the previous models, but even existing phones climbed $100 to $500.

This wasn’t a matter of big names cashing in on popular products. Overall, parents shopping for laptops for students found prices up 40% This fall. Samsung’s most popular smartphone doubled in price. Those who prefer to save money by building their own electronics found component prices soaring.

For decades, the price of new computers and tech gadgets had declined when measured in cost of memory, storage, and computing power. That changed in 2026. And it changed for one reason: the enormous demand for chips used by AI data centers.

The impact is best seen in the kind of computer chips that are most common, the random access memory chips used in almost any kind of "smart" device." Two years ago, the price of high performance DDR5 RAM was $4 per gigabyte. In 2026, the same DDR4 RAM runs between $11–$13 per gigabyte. If you can get it.

None of this may seem like that big a deal. You may not be planning to buy a new computer this year. You may hold off on purchasing a new smartphone. You may not play video games, or be shopping for a smart TV, or need a tablet. You may not be interested in a new car, whose infotainment and driver assistance systems are chock full of RAM.

Good for you. But it won't save you from paying the AI tax.

Because your grocery store is paying that penalty when they install new check out scanners. Your pizza place is paying more on every new delivery van. Factories that make everything else are paying more every time they add a new machine to the line. Farmers are paying more for their tech-laden tractors.

In our tech-heavy world, RAM chips are as much a commodity as wheat or oil. And just like newly expensive diesel fuel, these costs will creep into everything you buy.

Every server in an AI data center uses 1-2 terabytes of RAM. A single AI data center holds from 20,000 to 100,000 servers. Each building in a data center holds tens of petabytes. They are supertankers of computer chips, and they keep getting larger.

In 2026, data centers consumed 70% of all high end RAM. Everyone else, from Apple and Ford to basement tinkerers, are left to fight over what remains. Prices haven't just risen by over 300% in less than two years, they are still going up. That's why companies introducing new products find themselves having to sharply raise the prices even before they go on sale.

You may not use AI data centers. But they are certainly using you.
